Australian travel site Wotif.com has announced the winners of their annual Uniquely Aussie Awards, touted as the guide to Australia’s most underrated gems.
With international travel off the cards thanks to COVID-19, Aussies have opted for local destinations to get their immediate travel fix. What better way to support your local region, state and wider country than holidaying at home and finding some local gems.
New research from Wotif and YouGov revealed 70% of Aussies plan to take a road trip this year, with practically all people surveyed (92%) believing it’s the best way to discover local businesses and communities. From the capital cities to regional centres, it’s the underrated gems that 86% of Aussies agree make a local trip so great, with 40% loving Australia’s true-blue hospitality and a further 34% fond of the unique quirks you discover when holidaying at home.
Wotif Managing Director, Daniel Finch says while the big overseas destinations are off the cards for now, finding the local and uniquely Aussies attractions and destinations are worthy of any trip.
"Whether it's visiting one of Australia’s 150+ oversized roadside attractions or discovering a local market, the thousands of votes received this year made clear that every Aussie knows a local gem worthy of the spotlight. With the Australian sense of community at an all-time high, this year Wotif is encouraging Aussies to fuel this pride by taking the time to discover and support as many businesses as possible on their next Aussie adventure."
