If you love cars, or if you’re simply up for a weird and wonderful time, here’s a selection of Australia’s quirkiest car, bus and truck-themed getaways.
In the historic town of Melrose, four hours north of Adelaide, a converted bus sits among the gum trees at the base of Mount Remarkable. The bus, which is part of Kookaburra Creek Retreat, has been creatively transfigured into a six-sleeper bedroom and lounge. It's tucked away from the main retreat under a tin shelter and guests have access to a private kitchen and a dining and outdoor area. Sounds pretty bloody blissful to us.

It seems that the people of Melrose are connoisseurs of converted vehicles because just up the road from The Bedford Bus is the North Star Hotel. This boutique hotel provides three categories of accomodation: guest rooms, a cottage and a truck park.
The truck park is behind the main hotel and features two trucks that have been converted into comfy and spacious abodes. Inside you’ll find everything you could possibly need for a few nights away: a queen bed, ensuite, kitchenette, dining area and air-con.

If you're a get-on-the-road-and-go type of traveller with a soft spot for vintage vehicles, Retro Campervans is the rental company for you. Based in Byron Bay, these guys have three types of 1970s Kombi vans available for hire.
The vans have all the basic bits you’ll need: a bed that sleeps two (plus a set of bunk beds for the kids); a powered fridge; a gas stove burner; and an onboard water supply. Once you’ve booked, all you need to do is pick up the keys, stock up on some snacks and start your engine.
