For the wealthy end of town, the rewards can be personal, but success means turning a serious profit.
Each year the Top 200 Rich List is named by the Australian Financial Review, including an eye-watering 137 valued at over $1 billion. Amongst the mining magnates, tech-heads and crypto kingpins are many that have direct ties to the automotive and motorsports industries. Here are eight Aussie rich listers who are true car lovers.
Trucking magnate Lindsay Fox heads that list at #26 with a net worth of $4.20 billion. His wide range of interests includes the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, Australian Automotive Research Centre and the Fox Classic Car Collection gallery.
No #38 is Tony Perich and family who owned and operated Oran Park Raceway until its closure in 2010 to build one of the biggest housing estates in outer western Sydney. He is currently valued at $2.77 billion.
One place behind is Westfield heiress Betty Klimenko. The popular Erebus Motorsport managing director along with sister Monica Saunders-Weinberg and family is worth $2.70 billion.
$2.77 billion puts Nick Polites at #51 thanks to his 27% holding of Eagers Automotive and its 300 dealerships.
Longtime motorsports enthusiast, sponsor and Australian Grand Prix Chairman Paul Little comes in at #64 with a net worth of $1.82 billion.
Khalil Shahin and his family are the motorsports moguls of South Australia. Their Peregrin Corporation built and operates The Bend Motorsports Park as well as Mallala Raceway to go with their extensive portfolio of properties attached to the On The Run (OTR) petrol station and retail empire. The Shahins sit at #69 with a value of $1.53 billion.
The father of the Orbital Engine, Ralph Sarich, is at #76 with a net worth of $1.57 billion. The value of Sarich is set to be on the up with big investment in building lighter and cheaper batteries for electric vehicles.
The final name of note is ATECO managing director Neville Crichton. Who, in such illustrious company sits at #178 with a net worth of $798 million. During a span of what could have been seen as a tough time for an automotive importer to Australia, his stable of brands including Renault, Maserati, RAM, and LDV in Australia saw over 30,000 in sales.
With a wide range of interests from those on the Top 200 list, it is fair to say that at least another 10 have invested in the automotive industry.
