Australia’s worst roads revealed: Melbourne tops the list

Data reveals top crash hot spots in Australia, with nine of the top 10 collision prone locations in Victoria

New research has revealed the worst crash locations in the country are in Melbourne.

Data released from insurancer AAMI shows Plenty Road at Bundoora in Melbourne’s northeast tops the list for the most collision-prone area for the second year running, followed by Springvale Road at both Glen Waverley and Springvale.

AAMI says nine of the top ten of Australia’s worst locations for crashes are in Melbourne, with just one Sydney arterial grabbing a spot at number four on the nation’s list. That location is the Hume Highway in Liverpool.

NSW’s number two and three spots are Victoria Road in West Ryde and Pennant Hills Road. But neither of these locations make it into AAMI’s top ten.

Gympie Road in Chermside is Queensland’s worst spot, while Albany Highway is Western Australia’s most dangerous zone – both for the second year in a row.

Most of South Australia’s crashes now occur on North Terrace Road in Adelaide, with last year’s worst spot (The Parade in Norwood) dropping down to eighth in that state.

Anna Cartwright, AAMI’s Head of Motor Claims says Melbourne’s worst spot is currently being improved, with motorists urged to drive carefully during construction.

“Plenty Road in Bundoora has several lanes of traffic in both directions and feeds into many other major roads in Melbourne,” she said.

“The busy stretch of road is home to multiple traffic lights, entry and exit points, two main Universities and a tram line in the middle, making it the nation’s worst contender for car crashes in the last financial year.”

Cartwright said the crash hot spots are generally busy major arterial roads which intersect with local streets.

“When you combine this [busy main roads] with heavy traffic and frequent stopping, it is a perfect recipe for vehicle collisions,” she stated.
