Consulting this website may make you an auto expert but a little extra knowledge will not harm those dinner party conversations any. If you are at all interested in the vital statistics of thousands of exotic and not so exotic cars, Auto Expert HD might be the app for you.
Auto Expert HD contains over 45,000 European and US automobiles -- you won’t find a Falcon or Commodore here -- complete with a comprehensive specification database and photos. The app also contains a mini ‘guess that car’ game that utilises the image data.
Unfortunately this is not the best designed application in the world. Inadequate integration of the iOS interface technology requires the user to scroll through very long, unattractive lists of near-identical car models. Accessing the research tool would be made easier by including a Year of Manufacture search filter on the summary list.
In fact, the least said about the search function the better, due to its interface which is nigh unusable. Images are repeated for many models which is tolerable, though some entries have only internal shots whilst many have no image at all associated with the car.
The car information, however, is comprehensive for most vehicles, so if you want to know the top speed of an Autobianchi A112 elite three-door hatchback with five-speed manual, it is here. (140km/h for those interested).
There is information on engine configuration and performance; dimensions and general features as well as chassis and weight information. Details on safety equipment and comfort are also included. Details are minimal on some of the more exotic cars but for the most part information is comprehensive, and in metric.
Auto Expert HD is $4.99, and the jury is still out whether it is actually worth a fiver.
The design lacks polish (the spelling of ‘marque’ is ‘mark’, for instance), but the info is all here. If you really want to know the difference between the fuel economy of a 2003 Daewoo Kalos 12 Pure spec hatchback manual and the 2004 16v sedan version, start with this app.
