Baby 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 2 EV teased ahead of Sept 8 reveal

New Kia EV2-twin set to sit above the Inster and get brash new styling in a bid to overshadow the Renault 4 EV

The News

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 2 has been previewed for the first time by a new concept that will be unwrapped at the Munich motor show on September 8, with the compact EV set to come with radical styling that will include a large ducktail spoiler

The Key Details

  • Baby SUV to share platform and 400V electrics with Kia EV3
  • Could come with a 150kW e-motor and a 430km range
  • Design set to feature full-width LED light bars and ducktail spoiler
  • Should have big car tech, like twin-12.3-inch displays and V2L charging
  • Likely priced out of Australian consideration if it’s built in Europe

The Finer Details

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 2 small SUV concept has been teased ahead of its unveiling at the Munich motor show next fortnight, but its launch Down Under is still far from certain.

Likely to have its nameplate officially locked-in later, the new concept will feature an evolution of the facelifted Ioniq 6’s striking exterior design that will see the small SUV look more like a coupe than a wagon, with a cheeky integrated ducktail spoiler.

Other takeaways include an overtly sporty design, with a large front splitter, flared arches and a front bumper that looks like it will incorporate a large front air dam.

Developed alongside the inbound Kia EV2, the new member of the Ioniq family is set to slide into Hyundai’s EV range above the pint-sized Inster.

Based on the same 400V version of the e-GMP platform as the Kia EV2 and larger EV3, flagship versions of the Ioniq 2 are expected to combine a 150kW e-motor and a 58.3kWh battery that should see it cover more than 430km on a single charge.

In Europe, the new model will be positioned as a rival for both the Renault 5 E-Tech hatch and the Renault 4 E-Tech SUV, plus Chinese rivals like the BYD Dolphin.

The Road Ahead

The Ioniq 2’s fate Down Under rests on where it will be built; if assembled alongside the EV2 in Slovakia, expect it to be ruled out of our market by overly high pricing related to local tariffs and transport costs.

If production is out of China or South Korea, the Hyundai Ioniq 2 should make a worthy addition to Hyundai’s line-up, but one that will have to compete on costs beside the raft of cut-price Chinese opposition.
