The Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst is Australia’s most famous racing venue, but when Supercars and other motorsport events are not being staged, it’s a public road – with a 60km/h speed limit.
That point appears to have been lost on a driver who was busted by the New South Wales Police Force highway patrol.
“I thought it was a racetrack,” was the excuse given by the BMW 3 Series driver, whose embarrassing and potentially dangerous exploits were uploaded to Facebook by NSW Police.
The driver was nabbed at a speed of 119km/h in a 60km/h zone around Mt Panorama, doubling the speed limit.
This resulted in a $2520 on-the-spot fine, along with a six-month driver’s licence suspension (with six demerit points) and three months’ rego cancellation, meaning the car will be off the road for that period.
The Traffic and Highway Patrol Command’s notice of the infringement made it clear: “Mt Panorama, Bathurst is not a racetrack.
“It is a public road with a 60km/h speed limit where people reside, businesses operate and pedestrians walk.
“It is only a racetrack when it is closed to the public and authorised to be a racetrack.”
