Bathurst winner to drive 375km/h Porsche
In 1990 Tomas Mezera raced a Porsche 962C in the Le Mans 24 Hour race; two decades later he's back in the seat1988 Bathurst 1000 winner Tomas Mezera will get a second shot at driving the 375km/h Porsche 962C he raced in the 1990 24 Hours of Le Mans.
As part of Porsche Cars Australia's '60 Years in Australia' celebration, its "Museum on Wheels" will see the company field the 962C Le Mans race car at Queensland Raceway for the Shannons Sports & Muscle Car Spectacular during the weekend of June 25 and 26, with Mezera behind the wheel.
Two other vehicles from the German marque will also be at the event, the iconic 2003 Porsche Carrera GT and the long tail Porsche 935, dubbed 'Moby Dick'.
As chief driving instructor at the Porsche Sport Driving School since 2006, after joining the team in 1997, Czech-born Mezera counts his time driving the Porsche 962C at Le Mans as one of his career highlights.
"I'm quite excited to be able to step back into the Porsche 962C," said the 52-year-old. "It was always an amazing racecar to drive and provided some of the highlights of my racing career."
Racing with co-drivers Eje Elgh and Tomas Daniellson, Mezera's Porsche team finished the 1990 Le Mans 24 hour race in 15th place.
"The Porsche 962C is definitely the fastest car I have ever driven. Nudging 375km/h at Le Mans in the middle of the night, three times per lap, is an experience that will stay with me forever," explained Mezera.
The two-day Shannons Sports & Muscle Car Spectacular will also feature a number of locally-built V8 cars, with which Mezera is also familiar, having stood atop the podium at the Bathurst 1000 race in 1988.
"It is hard to compare the Porsche 962C to a V8 Supercar because it is a purpose built racecar. In 1990, I also did three long distance races in a Holden V8 Supercar and I remember it was always easier to jump into a Holden after racing the previous weekend in a 962C.
"It was definitely harder going the other way because everything was happening much quicker in the Porsche," noted the race driver.
