Bay to Birdwood entries open
Classic car rally to kick off again at the end of September, this year celebrating the pre-1956 eraOrganisers of the Bay to Birdwood Run are accepting entries for this year's event, which is open to vehicles and fashions from the era prior to 1956.
As many as 1300 vehicles are expected to take part in the event, which will take a different route this year. The event will start from Adelaide Shores, Barratt Reserve West Beach, flagged away by Glen Dix – of Adelaide AGP fame. From there, vehicles will make their way to the National Motor Museum in Birdwood via the new (70km) route, turning right at Grand Junction Road and heading through Houghton and Inglewood.
Now in its 34th year, the Bay to Birdwood Run will attract 70,000 spectators along the route – with 5000 alone at the start and as many as 10,000 at the finish – the organisers estimate.
"We have listened to the feedback provided by entrants and this year's route is almost going back to the original with a slight change," said Bay to Birdwood Chairman, Martin Haese.
"This is to accommodate the needs of the older vehicles and striking a balance between managing escalating traffic management costs and more traffic on the roads.
"We are committed to delivering a wonderful iconic South Australian event for motoring enthusiasts, local communities, families and tourists," Haese concluded.
At the finish participating vehicles will be lined up in a Concours d'Elegance, in which they will be scrutinised by judges for presentation – as will their drivers and passengers dressed for the occasion.
And there's an additional drawcard for the event this year: 100 years of military motoring history will be marked with the inclusion of vehicles like the Ford and Chev Blitzwagons of the World War Two era.
