BEIJING MOTOR SHOW: Audi launches stretched A4 L

German car-maker cashes in on China’s growing middle class by offering LWB version of small A4

Audi has chosen the Chinese motor show to launch a new long-wheelbase variant of its A4 sedan.

Based on the current A4, Audi claims the new A4 L weighs in 110kg less than the old version that proved a hit with buyers who prefer to be driven than drive themselves.

Featuring a wheelbase stretched by almost 90mm, the new longer version is said to be the longest A4 ever built.

Inside, rear passengers can luxuriate with abundant legroom, plus there's a WiFi hotspot and a powerful sound system.

Just one engine is available with the A4 L, the 2.0-litre turbo petrol with either 140kW or 185kW. Combined with the seven-speed dual-clutch auto, A4 L buyers also have the choice of front-wheel or Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive.

There are no plans to offer the A4 L outside of China when it goes on sales some time after July this year.
