Bentley celebrates coronation with cushions fit for a king

British luxury car-maker Bentley has found an unusual way to celebrate this weekend’s coronation of King Charles, tasking its designers to create a limited series of bespoke cabin cushions.

Produced at the Bentley factory in Crewe, the small pillows are said to blend cutting-edge technology with the brand’s trademark high levels of craftsmanship.

Taking inspiration from cushions originally created for the 1958 Bentley S1 Continental Flying Spur – five years after Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953 – each pillow is said to have taken three days and four different iterations of the embroidery process before being signed off.

Each pillow is also said to carry almost 30,000 stitches, including its intricate emblem.

The commemorative embroidered crown consists of two separate thread colours, while three different emblems were created to help contrast with the different coloured hides used to make the pillows.

Bentley chose just four colours for the pillows – Cricketball, Cumbrian Green, Imperial Blue and Saddle. All are combined with either Beluga, Porpoise, Newmarket Tan or Imperial Blue piping.

Taking more than three hours each to produce, the bespoke pillows were created for Bentley’s own fleet and are not available for purchase.

It’s not known just how many have been made, but it’s said they’ll spend the coronation in two Bentayga extended wheelbases, two Bentayga Hybrids and one other “highly bespoke” but unnamed model.

All are expected to be involved in the coronation this weekend, but it’s not known whether King Charles himself will be using them.
