Bentley sketches out Mulsanne Convertible concept

Famous British manufacturer to build full-size convertible on Mulsanne platform?

Is Bentley casting around for a successor to the Azure? The company yesterday issued a press release, accompanied by design sketches, for a new four-seat convertible based on the Mulsanne platform.

While the press release was long on puffery and short on details, it did include a comment from Bentley chairman and CEO, Wolfgang Dürheimer, who was quoted in a way that left little doubt the design study will make it into production.

“The modern, luxurious, high-tech Mulsanne saloon provides a perfect foundation on which to create the world’s most elegant convertible,” he said. “The Convertible Concept will extend the appeal of the Mulsanne family, while enhancing the profile of the Bentley brand, particularly in new and emerging markets.”

The Mulsanne convertible, should it go into production, will presumably run the same drivetrain as the sedan, or a tweaked version — but compliant with Euro 5 emissions legislation. In the Mulsanne sedan the engine is an extensively updated version of the 6.75-litre V8 that has powered Bentleys for decades.
