Mercedes-Benz is claiming its facelifted E-Class coupe and cabriolet will deliver up to $20,000 better value than the models they replace.
On sale this month, the pared back range includes many of the high-tech features that have also been launched with the updated W212 E-Class sedan and wagon and will also feature in the new W222 S-Class saloon due on-sale here late in 2013. However, one thing the E-Class C207 coupe and A207 cabriolet models retain is the controversial bulges in the rear guards that were removed from the sedan and wagon update.
Instead the two-doors carry over all their sheetmetal, albeit underlined by a new bumper to accommodate the updated W212’s ‘Torch’ LED headlamps and three-part lower grille.
They also retain the 2760mm wheelbase shared with the C-class coupe – signifying this car shares much technically with the cheaper model, but with an extra 115mm of body length.
However, drivetrain changes reflect those of the E-class sedan.
The revised E-class two-door range adds the E200 hard and cloth-tops powered by a new 2.0-litre direct injection petrol-turbo engine, replacing the old 1.8 turbo. The 2.0 now also drives the E250.
The old E350 has been replaced by the twin turbo V6 E400. The E250 CDI turbo-diesel continues as a coupe but has been dropped from the cabrio lineup. The E500 V8 disappears from both lineups. Seven-speed autos are standard across the range.
According to the figures released by Benz at today’s media launch, the E400 coupe scores a $20,000 (approx) value improvement compared to its predecessor. The E250 cabrio lifts by around $17,000, the E250 CDI coupe and E400 cabrio by $15,000 and the E250 coupe more than $10,000.
The value improvements take into account both added equipment and – in some cases – minor price drops.
Standard features include Active Park Assist, 19-inch wheels (18s for the 200s), Parktronic, Keyless-go, Thermatic automatic climate control, and Airscarf neck-level heating system for the cabriolet.
The E 400s alone include a Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system and 360-degree camera.
Standard safety features equipment includes Distronic Plus with steering assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Pre-Safe Brake with Active Pedestrian Protection, Pre-Safe Plus and BAS Plus with Junction Assist.
