Mercedes-Benz is set to unleash its first seven-seat AMG SUV in its history, the twin-turbo V8-powered GL 63.
Based on the third-generation M-Class launched here in June and stuffed full of enough engine to launch its 2580kg frame from rest to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds, the hulking GL 63 AMG has the sort of performance that would have frightened Ferraris not long ago.
The fire-breathing SUV packs a variation of AMG’s ubiquitous twin turbocharged and direct injected 5.5-litre V8, delivering a thunderous 410kW and 760Nm via AMG’s Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic transmission and a permanent, 60 per cent rear-biased four-wheel drive system.
For the mathematically inclined, the GL63’s outputs are a substantial 90kW/60Nm up on the new GL500 V8, ensuring the AMG version is a handy half a second faster to 100km/h. There’s also likely to be an optional Performance Pack in the future boasting 800Nm and slightly more power.
For all this, the GL 63 AMG uses only a litre more fuel per 100km than the standard GL500’s 11.3L/100km on the combined city/highway cycle.
Underneath the bulky exterior is AMG’s own air-supported ride control system with adaptive damping control, which replaces the GL500’s standard air suspension. The system features self-leveling and dynamic roll-bar technology.
Powerful looking titanium-grey 21-inch five-spoke alloy wheels fitted with chunky 295/40-section tyres lurk within specifically flared front wheel-arches, endowing the GL 63 with slightly wider front and rear tracks over standard.
The not inconsiderable braking duties are performed by ventilated and perforated discs all round, measuring 390 x 36mm up front and 345 x 26mm at the rear.
The AMG GL 63 is differentiated from lesser GL models by a full AMG body kit, including a high-gloss black grille, aggressive front bumper with larger air-intakes and LED daytime running lights and a twin-outlet exhaust.
The bahnstorming GL63 AMG is not yet confirmed for Australia but appears almost certain to join the second-generation GL range following its launch here next March.
“The GL63 is not confirmed for our market,” Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific Corporate Communications Manager Jerry Stamoulis told motoring.com.au in June.
“But considering how popular the ML63 is, we’re seriously considering it.”
