Best of Bentley: Mulliner dream factory

"Anything is possible in the world of Mulliner" is the marketing slogan heavily overused by Bentley's bespoke and personalisation department.

But, less than five minutes after setting foot in its flagship Mulliner showroom a stone's throw from the Crewe factory, it's a line I fall for hook, line and sinker.

If you imagine it, Bentley Mulliner's team of designers and craftsman truly can make it — from an infinite range of colours, wood veneers, leather and custom interiors.

It's at the Mulliner dream factory we meet fellow believer, project leader Omah Sheikh, who's swapped developing engines and transmissions for the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Mulsanne to work for Mulliner and some of Bentley's wealthiest (and most demanding) customers.

It's clearly a challenge he relishes and his infectious enthusiasm for all things bespoke has seen many of his customers regularly drop six-figure sums on top of their hefty purchase price.

Key to fulfilling his customer's wild, wonderful and sometime downright bizarre requests for personalising their Continental GT or Bentayga is the British car-maker's relatively small size.

If a particular buyer is struggling to articulate what they want, Sheikh can just pop over to Bentley’s on-site design department to sketch exactly what they might want and this collaboration adds huge value to the person writing the cheque.

Same goes with the team of craftsmen and women who are literally able to create everything from fly fishing cabinets to mobile offices or chilled cocktail cabinets — by hand — for anything from the Bentayga to the Mulsanne.

Of course, all this comes at a cost but for many owners the experience of buying their own made-to-measure, one-in-a-million Bentley that they helped to create is well worth the price of admission.
