BEST OF BRITISH: Aston Martin AM-RB 001 Concept

Once in a generation, a car re-writes the rules. Aston Martin is doing just that with a little help from an F1 genius

Aston Martin hasn't created a space-aged hypercar to beat Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche. It's created the AM-RB 001 to humiliate them.

Fair dinkum, this car's got more techno doodads than Elon Musk's man cave, combining hybrid and aerospace wizardry with a killer V12 donk.

Priced at around $5million each, with no more than 150 to be built, demand has already outstripped supply. And you can't even drive it until 2019.

But the wait will be worth it. Aston says the car, developed in conjunction with one of F1's most gifted engineers Red Bull Racing’s Adrian Newey, will deliver F1 levels of performance.

And that's no idle boast.

Newey is F1's most talented aerodynamicist. His lovechild with Aston Martin will be capable generating up to 3Gs laterally while cornering. And it’ll do so, while being road legal, because of this genius designer’s ability to push the limits of car design permissible by law.

The F1 legend is applying the same meticulous attention to detail on a road car that's earned him 10 F1 world championships. Every little gram of weight saved, every bit of extra downforce achieved – you name it, he's chipping away at it.

The problem solving ability required to build a vehicle that will set a similar pace to an F1 car in full race trim around the Silverstone GP circuit yet be comfortable enough to, according to Newey, "potter down to the shops", will be immense. But with Newey taking the lead, the team of engineers from both Red Bull Advanced Technologies and Q by Aston Martin Advanced is confident the circa-745kW (1000hp) machine will meet these previously irreconcilable requirements.

Indeed, the projections say this car will be so fast you'll be at the shops before you buckle your belt.

But you really should buckle it because you can potentially break ribs in this road missile, such are the G-forces it will be capable of generating. Insiders say passengers limbs are going to have to be restrained so they don't end up slapping the driver. Or worse! For instance, mashing the accelerator pedal. So where will your feet go? In a teeny, tiny tunnel.

During one of the highlights of our Best of British (BoB) tour, Miles Nurnberger, Aston Martin's chief exterior designer, explained.

"You sit very much like a formula car. Your feet [are] higher than your hips, and [you sit] quite reclined."

Sounds awkward, right? Won't be a problem for Aussie F1 superstar Daniel Ricciardo, who has already put his hand up to be a test driver for the AM-RB 001.

The car's designer reckons it'll be comfy car to sit it, although let's remember he's being paid to say so.

"Actually it's very, very comfortable," insists Nurnberger.

"At first you think it'll be alien, but it's not. It's very comfortable."

And getting in and out of the road and track weapon will be "quite fun," he reveals.

We're not sure if this means you'll giggle at the invoice required for regular chiropractic manipulation or whether the doors will be open gullwing style. Hopefully the latter...

After pondering the finer points of this intercontinental ballistic missile and the paradigm shift in thinking required to develop it, this could turn out to be one of the most important cars ever made.

Weighing less than 1000kg and belting out at least 745kW (1000hp) thanks to a 6.0-litre V12 hybrid powertrain, the car will generate enough pace to lap the Silverstone GP circuit 25 seconds faster than a Ferrari LaFerrari or McLaren P1.

So how is it possible to cram almost an almost 750kW powertrain into a two-seater, rear-drive road car that weighs less than 1000kg?

"It's going to be tough!" smiles Nurnberger, but he reckons it's entirely achievable, thanks in large part to the Red Bull Racing love-in.

"We're learning from our F1 friends quite a few [packaging] tricks" is as much as the designer will reveal at this point, but expect some very clever hybrid jiggery-pokery going on.

As well as meeting the performance criteria set by F1 engineering maestro Adrian Newey, one of the trickiest challenges will be making it truly road-legal.

Working very closely with lawyers (hourly consults, says the designer with an alarmingly straight face) to ensure it meets legal road requirements, the AM-RB 001 won't even have wing mirrors. Instead it'll get miniature cameras, which should be legal by the time it reaches customers in 2019.

The AM-RB 001 will set the mark so high, we're going to need a bigger bench.
