Best pet-friendly car accessories for your furry friends

April 11 is National Pet Day! Is there anything better than planning a road trip with your best friends? I’m talking human BFFs AND the furry, four-legged kind.

Whether you’re off on a week-long holiday, or you like to have your pet BFF join you for daily errands, before you get in the car and hit the road it’s best to make sure you have the latest accessories to make the trip safe for everyone.

And I don’t know about you, but there isn’t anything I wouldn’t buy to ensure our family Lab, Archie is safe and sound when we take him out. He is the best boy and deserves all the treats!

Here are a few key pet-friendly car accessories to consider.

Dog car seat belt

No doubt your pup is your best friend so making sure they’re secure in the car is a top priority. Just like you wouldn’t leave the driveway without putting on your seatbelt, the same can be said for your furry pal.

It’s one of the easiest to use and takes up no extra space, as they work by clipping in one end to the red seat belt buckle while the other end clips to the back of your dog’s harness. It’s important to remember that you should never connect the seat belt to your dog’s collar as it can be a choking hazard in the event of an accident or sudden braking.

There’s never a shortage of this product on the market, and you can always find what you’re looking for online. If you already have a harness, this dog seat belt is available on Amazon, but if you’re after both the belt and the harness, all good pet stores have a range of options to choose from.

Car Hammock/Seat Cover

As much as we love our furry friends, and as cuddly and soft as they are, it’s important to also protect the interior of your car. Not only will this save you from constantly having to vacuum off the fur from your car seats, but it’ll also ensure everything is protected against scratch marks, dirt, and other debris your dog might bring into the car. Not only this, but it also contains your dog to a smaller area of the car, making it even safer for them to join you!

A dog car hammock is a piece of waterproof fabric that you drape and secure between the back of the front seats and back seats over the headrests. They also come in a range of sizes, depending on the size of your four-legged friend.

The Ultimate Dog Car Seat Protector is one option to consider, or another is this hammock. Either way, your pup will be secure, and your seats protected!

Snacks and packs

You wouldn’t go on a road trip without packing a few supplies for yourself, and the same can be said when it comes to treats for your pet!

Obviously, it’s not easy (or safe) to have a bowl filled with water while driving, but for those pitstops along the way, a collapsible water and food bowl is a good item to have. They’re easy to fill up and clean out, and most tend to have a carabiner clip so you can keep it attached to your keys or travel bags, so you’ll never be without it!

This bowl pack comes with two bowls for food and water, plus a storage carry bag which is perfect for longer trips and camping.

Make sure you pack your pet’s favourite snacks too! If you’re after something that won’t make too much of a mess in your car, dental treats are a good in-car option!

Travel Crate

Not only is this a good alternative to the seat belts and harnesses for pups, but it’s also suited for the times cats and kittens join you on the road! It’s also a handy accessory to have for those trips to the vet.

While we have been focused on taking your pups on a road trip (sorry cat lovers), this carrier is perfect for all your smaller furry pals.

A pet booster seat is also a good option if you’re looking for another alternative, and can be easily installed onto any bucket seat in the front or back to give them a prime view out the window.
