Better Place opens for business in Canberra
The EV infrastructure specialist has activated its first charge point as part of a major ACT retail redevelopmentBetter Place has declared its first Australian charge point open for business. The EV infrastructure company this week whipped the covers off its take on the bowser of the future at Canberra's Belconnen Fresh Food Markets.
And while Australia has a long way to go before Better Place's electric charge points catch on, this one has its work cut out from the moment they switched it on. A sustainable building company called The Rock Development Group will use it, along with Better Place's EV management services, to help run the Mitsubishi i-MiEV it took delivery of back in August. The charge point will play an integral part in boosting the range of the car, thereby maximising its day-to-day usefulness.
The choice of location is tied up with The Rock's Loop project, a $130m redevelopment of the Fresh Food Markets site.
A group of suits circled by paparazzi as they gobble canapes and sip champers around a stump with an electric cord extending from it might sound like sketch comedy, but this is more about the future than the present.
According to the company's head of deployment, Geoff Zippel, this is merely "the first 'metal in the ground' for Better Place in Canberra, and a significant and exciting milestone. This achievement paves the way for the next phase of our deployment." By that he means the company will start rolling out its wider charge-point network across Canberra in Q4 2011.
