BMW has confirmed it will release both the M2 Coupe and M4 GTS Coupe in Australia in the second quarter of next year.
The bad news is only between 10 to 15 examples of the hottest ever M4 will be made available here — at a price that's likely to top $250,000, making it up to $100K pricier than the standard M4 Coupe — from a global total of just 700 units
BMW says that's unlikely to prevent the M4 GTS being a sell-out success even before it arrives Down Under, although a few more vehicles may be secured if demand is high.
"The minute the car was online, we received telephone calls not only to
the dealers, all the way to our head office," said Marc Werner, BMW
Group Australia CEO, of the M4 GTS.
"We picked up the phone [to Munich] to ensure we get additional cars," he said.
In contrast, pricing of more than $100,000 for the first ever M2 will exceed that if its predecessor, the limited-edition 1 Series M Coupe, to reflect its higher output and specifications.
BMW says the smaller M2 will be a full-time production model, but local supplies will nevertheless be tight, at least initially.
Packing a 272kW/465Nm version of BMW's 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline six, the M2 is claimed to hit 100km/h in 4.3 seconds, making it a rival for Audi's RS3 Sportback and the Mercedes-AMG A 45 hot hatches.
The M4 GTS delivers an incredible 368kW power output but no less than 600Nm of torque thanks to its water-injected twin-turbo six, allowing the larger coupe to charge to 100km/h in a supercar-rivalling 3.8 seconds and a 300km/h-plus top speed.
