Big numbers for rego plates

Buyers collectively spent millions purchasing historic registration plates last weekend

An early motorcycle registration plate has sold for $140,000.

The New South Wales plate ('8') sold for a higher amount than the arguably more significant '2' plate which was also on sale at the Shannons auction held last weekend, the final day of the AIMS in Sydney.

Motorcycle plates were eclipsed by the $245,000 paid for the car registration plate '78' and combined sales for early NSW registration plates at the auction accounted for $2.64 million.

62 plates were sold through the auction and the total sales result for the plates exceeded the sales figures for classic cars at the same auction.

Some of the plates fetching big sums contained the number '8'. Two such plates -- '228' and '883' -- sold for $140,000 and $110,000, respectively.

Total value of the lots sold at auction reached approximately $3.7 million. Sums bid for individual cars didn't quite reach the stratospheric heights Shannons predicted before the auction, although the LJ Torana XU-1 (more here) sold for $143,000.
