Volvo has announced further details of its XC60 Concept – the compact offroader it will debut at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit in two weeks (for more see
).Though a moot point given the car's 'concept' status, the Swedish marque is keen to play up the green credentials of the all-roader. To this end it has announced it will be powered by a E85-fuelled engine.
E85 is the term used in the USA and Europe for an 85 per cent ethanol-petrol fuel. The ethanol is renewable being produced via (variously) grain and or sugar-based refining and distillation processes.
Volvo says the XC60's S80-based 3.2-litre inline six delivers just shy of 200kW and 340Nm in its E85 optimised form. It powers the XC60 from 0-60mph (approx 100km/h) in 8.2sec seconds. Says Volvo, the XC60's top speed is close to 230km/h (official 143mph).
Volvo claims economy of 12.3lt/100km for the all-wheel drive.
Says the car maker: "Renewable bio ethanol is a fuel that is on the move in Europe and Volvo Cars has launched FlexiFuel models in several new markets and will continue to do so in 2007. Markets to get Volvo's FlexiFuel cars outside Sweden are France, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland."
Volvo says it predicts sales of 7000 FlexiFuel cars in 2007.
