Nothing exceeds like excess, and these photos of an in-development Black Series version of the Mercedes-Benz SLS gullwing coupe show something with the clear ability to upstage just about any exoticar you can imagine.
How refreshing it is, for a car to be marketed as 'Black Series' being paraded before Carparazzi's resident spy photographers at the Nurburgring, finished in — you guessed it — black. A matt black to be precise, one of a few matt finish colours offered to buyers of the SLS. The colour is only part of the story however.
Take, for instance, the cartoonish extended wheel arches, the enlarged (though still slightly disguised) snout and what appears to be a wider rear track with beefed-up brakes hiding behind chunky wheels. The effect is almost alarmingly sinister – an unashamedly brutal design that takes automotive machismo to new levels.
The rumour mill is wild with speculation about the Black Edition SLS, but so far no credible details have emerged about the car’s powerplant – although you would be safe to imagine it punching out more power and torque than the regular 6.2-litre V8’s puny 420kW/650Nm. Rumours exist of outputs around 450kW/677Nm. Presumably the steroid-enhanced SLS would gain a modified suspension to deal with the extra performance.
The Black Edition SLS is expected to be launched on world markets in 2013.
