Mark Skaife races a blacked-out BMW M6 to prove Vodafone’s 4G reliability
TV commercials are all about the drama and the extreme but authenticity? Rarely.
Vodafone’s CEO Iñaki Berroeta joined V8 Supercar champion Mark Skaife in what is Vodafone’s most innovative and honest marketing activation to date.
It could also be one of the most challenging stunts pulled off in an Aussie TV commercial.
Created by Design Intoto and produced by Oxygen 360, the TVC shows the pair scooting around Calder Park Raceway at high speed in a BMW M6 with the windows completely blacked out.
They use three Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphones which are fixed to the car’s windscreen to help navigate the outside.
Each phone streams what it sees outside to a Samsung tablet inside the car and acts as the only eyes on the road. Skaife aptly described it as “Being in a fair dinkum real-time simulator.”
The stunt was designed to demonstrate the reliability of Vodafone’s 4G network and Skaife nailed it.
“This is what modern marketing is all about – it’s one thing to say we have a reliable network, it’s another to demonstrate it, and that’s what we set out to do,” said Vodafone Head of Brand and Insights, Lou Kuegler.
