Blown V8 for Kia concept

Kia's wild offroad coupe concept boasts a supercharged V8

Kia might be best known for its cheap and cheerful econocars Down Under, but it's pointing to a much more performance-oriented future with its latest unveiling, the Kue.

Debuted at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) this week, the offroad concept coupe boasts no less than a 300kW-plus supercharged DOHC V8 under its stylish, steeply sloping bonnet.

It also features full-time AWD, a five-speed auto with sequential shifting and rolls on monster 22-inch low-profile rubber.

Unveiled in Detroit along with Kia's new global design chief, Peter Schreyer (it was the ex-Audi and VW exec's first official visit to the USA in the role), the Kue is claimed by Kia to employ "a different approach to the crossover utility vehicle segment."

Says Kia: "Kue is designed first and foremost as a driver's vehicle. While possessing SUV characteristics and capabilities, the Kia Kue focuses more on giving the driver an exhilarating driving experience on the way to the home improvement centre, rather than on how much you can carry home."

The Kue is no shrinking violet. Riding on a wheelbase of more than 2900mm it is over 4700mm long. By way of comparison, the current generation (E53) BMW X5 rides on a 2820mm wheelbase and is a tad under 4670mm long.

Two huge scissor-hinged doors provide access to seating for four in the Kue's two rows of individual bucket seats. The offroad coupe also features two beetle-wing (can't call 'em 'gull' can we!) centre-hinged rear hatch covers and touch-pad controls.

Kia says the Kue hints at future styling directions for the company but stresses it is purely a concept vehicle.
