BMW 2 Series Convertible priced to please

Successor to drop-top 1 Series kicks off at $55K, delivers improved performance across the board
BMW Australia has today announced pricing for the new 2 Series Convertible range, with the entry-level 220i priced from $54,900 with automatic transmission as standard.
Developed alongside the 2 Series Coupe, the convertible range is layered in three tiers: 220i, 228i and M235i. Unlike the coupe version, there is no diesel variant available for the folding-roof model. The 228i variant is priced at $68,900 and the M235i tops the range at $85,800.
Key highlights of the new range include a 20 per cent increase in torsional rigidity and 10 per cent gain in bending strength – against the 1 Series predecessor – and road noise reduced by 7dB through added insulation in the roof, which can open and close within 20 seconds at speeds up to 50km/h.
BMW claims improved output for the three variants. Peak power and torque figures are 135kW/270Nm (220i) and 180kW/350Nm (228i), with the M235i rated at 240kW/450Nm. All models drive to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. BMW claims the M235i will knock over the 0-100km/h dash in five seconds.
Standard features across the range include Driving Experience Control, reversing camera, parking sensors, alloy wheels and cruise control with braking function. Climate control automatically modulates airflow intensity and temperature according to the speed of the vehicle with the roof lowered.
The M235i brings with it standard M Adaptive suspension, upgraded brakes, variable sport steering and 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the flagship comes equipped with sports seats in front, a multi-function leather-bound steering wheel, leather trim for gearshift lever, an M driver's footrest and aluminium decorative trim with coordinating strips in matt Estoril blue or high-gloss black.
"The new BMW 2 Series Convertible is an incredibly exciting addition to our vehicle line-up, and represents a significant evolution from its 1 Series predecessor," said BMW Australia's Head of Product and Market Planning, Shawn Ticehurst.
"A classic BMW convertible, the model inhabits a unique place within the market, and presents a compelling lifestyle proposition, with sporty lines and impressive performance which is only reinforced by its accessible entry point pricing."
While the local pricing is now officially in the public domain, the cars themselves don't arrive in dealer showrooms until next month.
