BMW 220i Gran Coupe announced

New mid-range 2 Series sedan variant slated for Australia within months

A third variant of BMW’s answer to the Audi A3 sedan and the Mercedes-Benz CLA and A-Class sedan will soon be available in Australia, in the form of the BMW 220i Gran Coupe.

Slated for local release in the third quarter of this year, the third member of the four-door BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe line-up will be priced at $53,990 plus on-road costs.

That positions it between the existing 218i Gran Coupe ($49,990) and M235i xDrive Gran Coupe ($72,990), both in terms of price and performance.

It also gives BMW two variants of the 2 Series Gran Coupe priced below the entry-level Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 ($60,700 plus ORCs), although the A 180 opens the A-Class sedan range at $46,200.

Under the bonnet of the BMW 220i Gran Coupe is a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine that produces 141kW and 280Nm, sending drive to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

That compares with 103kW/220Nm for the three-cylinder 218i and 225kW/450Nm for the M235i. Nought to 100km/h in the 220i Gran Coupe officially takes 7.2 seconds, according to BMW.

In Australia, the BMW 220i Gran Coupe will be offered standard with BMW’s M Sport package, bringing an M Sport steering wheel, sports seats trimmed in cloth or synthetic Sensatec leather, and an anthracite headliner.

The new middling variant rides on 18-inch wheels and features an M Sport bodykit, LED headlights, LED fog lights and LED tail-lights.

Inside, the BMW 220i Gran Coupe’s driving, infotainment, tech and safety features are projected via the Connected Package Professional suite, which comprises a 10.25-inch infotainment screen and matching 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster.

Apple CarPlay and wireless phone charging are also provided, as is ambient lighting and a six-speaker sound system.

Elsewhere, there are front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, automatic parking function and safety features such lane departure and lane change warnings, low-speed autonomous emergency braking with approach warning, rear cross-traffic warning, rear collision warning, and speed limit information.

Nestled within the optional extras catalogue will be BMW's adaptive suspension, which can be configured between Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ settings.
