BMW 230i Coupe locked in for June arrival

Mid-range 2 Series pinches 430i’s grunty four-banger and shaves than $20K off the asking price

BMW Australia’s local 2 Series Coupe line-up will expand next month when the mid-range 2022 BMW 230i arrives on Aussie soil priced from $70,700 plus on-road costs.

Powered by the same 190kW/400Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as the bigger (and more expensive) BWM 430i, the rear-drive 230i will dart to 100km/h in a claimed 5.8 seconds – exactly the same as its 4 Series counterpart.

As with most modern BMWs, transmission duties are handled by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to adding power and performance over the lesser 220i, the 230i also adds a couple of extra niceties to the standard equipment list, as well as a few more athletic touches befitting of its gruntier powerplant.

M Sport brakes, adaptive LED headlights, a HiFi Loudspeaker audio system, adaptive cruise control, electric seat adjustment and Comfort Access are all included on top of the 220i’s comprehensive list of standard features.

Highlights include the obligatory M Sport Package, M Sport suspension, 18-inch M alloy wheels, variable sports steering, driving and parking assistants, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25 infotainment screen, ambient lighting, DAB+ digital radio, smartphone mirroring, LED exterior lighting and wireless phone charging.

As usual for BMW, there’ll be plenty of option packs available including the Enhancement Pack ($3900), Comfort Pack ($1400), M Sport Plus Pack ($1500) and Executive Pack ($3300); all of which inject the 230i with an extra element of opulence or athleticism.

“The 230i, which will be available for customer deliveries from next month, combines a honed chassis, responsive powertrain, progressive styling package and a high level of specification,” BMW said in a statement.

“The new 2 Series Coupé opens a new chapter for BMW while continuing the brand’s rich tradition of sport-focused compact models that began with the legendary BMW 02.

“Components and technology sourced from the new BMW 4 Series combine with the model-specific development program to lay the foundations for outstanding performance attributes.”

How much does the 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe cost?
220i (a) – $61,900
230i (a) – $70,900
M240i xDrive (a) – $89,900
