BMW's 3 Series Gran Turismo will be quietly dropped from the German car-maker's line-up in 2020 following the news production of the coupe-style hatch has ceased.
According to reports, BMW bosses are claiming that demand for the 3 Series GT is at 'desired levels' and the decision to ditch it was part of an internal costs-cutting efficiency drive.
Introduced back in 2013, the 3 Series Gran Turismo was sold alongside the sedan and Touring wagon in all major markets. Facelifted in 2016, it was confirmed last year by BMW chairman Harold Kruger that there would not be a successor to the 3 GT based on the new seventh-generation G20 model.
Created to originally appeal to those who wanted a more spacious sedan with coupe-esque looks, the real motivation was the premium BMW could charge over the regular sedan.
Where the 3 GT struggled was failing to tempt buyers away from SUVs.
BMW boss Kruger has already declared he will implement cost saving measures that will slash around €12 billion ($A19bn) from the car-maker's overheads.
As well as culling slow-sellers, the cuts are said to involve reducing the current drivetrain variants, moving to just two vehicle architectures and reducing R&D times by up to a third.
