The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupe will arrive in Australia mid-October, priced from $73,200 for the entry-level 420d. This represents an increase of $8300 over the previous entry-level model, the 320d Coupe High-line.
The sporty two-door German car gets its own numeric designation and three models will debut in October, the 420d, 428i and range-topping 435i – replacing the much-loved BMW 3 Series Coupe.
Taking aim at the Audi A5 Coupe and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, BMW says the price increases across the 4 Series range – all roughly $8000 compared to the previous High-line models – will be ameliorated via improved standard features.
"The all-new 4 Series represents an increase in exclusivity that is reflected in its very high level of standard equipment and innovative cutting edge technology," said Phil Horton, managing director of BMW Group Australia.
All models are packaged as standard with eight-speed automatic transmissions, plus EfficientDynamics technologies to keep fuel usage low. This includes on-demand ancillary systems, auto stop/start for the engine and brake energy regeneration.
The entry-level 420d gets comes standard with dual-zone auto climate control, automatically adjusting xenon headlights, rain-sensing wipers, self-dimming rear view mirror, fully electric sports seats with memory functions for driver and passenger, and Dakota leather upholstery.
Six airbags, a host of dynamic stability controls, front and rear parking sensors, 60:40 split folding rear seats, a six-speaker stereo and 'Business' satellite navigation with USB and multi-device Bluetooth pairing are also standard in the entry-level BMW 4 Series Coupe.
The mid-spec BMW 428i Coupe ($86,500) gets all of the features listed above and adds electric lumbar support to the front seats, a higher quality nine-speaker stereo, auto-dimming exterior mirrors and a 'Professional' sat nav system. The latter also delivers a bigger 8.8-inch infotainment screen, DVD drive and 20Gb hard disc.
Adaptive M suspension is also part of the 428i package, which drops the car's ride height by 10mm and offers adaptive damping, ranging between comfort and sport.
The 420d and 428i can also be optioned with Sport Line or Luxury Line packages at no extra cost.
The Sport Line adds gloss black exterior highlights and a chrome black exhaust tip, while the interior gets chrome pearl grey highlights, a sport leather steering wheel, two leather colour options and 18-inch alloy wheels. The 428i gets 19-inch rims.
The Luxury Line package adds chrome exterior trim and a choice of saddle brown, Veneto beige or black leather upholstery. Different alloy wheel designs are thrown in too.
At the top of the 4 Series pecking order – until the M4 arrives in 2014 – is the 435i ($108,500) which comes as standard with an M Sport package. This adds 19-inch 'M' double-spoke alloy wheels, variable sport steering, M adaptive suspension, and a beefed-up four-piston front brake caliper.
An M aerodynamics package is included too, as is an M leather steering wheel and a handful of interior upgrades. That means a Comfort Access system and a beefy 600 Watt 16-speaker harman/kardon surround sound system.
The BMW 420d Coupe is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that cranks out 135kW/380Nn, which is good enough to propel the car from 0-100km/h in 7.3 seconds while maintaining good fuel economy of 4.6L/100km.
The 428i Coupe runs a revvy 180kW/350Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that'll accelerate from 0-100km/h in a claimed 5.8 seconds while using an average of 6.4L/100km with gentle driving.
If performance is key, the 435i Coupe will be a good weapon of choice, its 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine delivering a claimed 225kW/400Nm – enough pepper to see it race from 0-100km/h in just 5.1 seconds. Its average fuel consumption is rated at 7.4L/100km.
Longer, wider, lower and more exciting to drive that its predecessor, the new BMW 4 Series Coupe measures 4638mm long (+26mm), 1825mm wide (+ 43mm) and 1362mm (-16mm) high.
With a 50mm longer wheelbase and an 80mm wider rear track, the car's aesthetics have also changed, boasting a sportier appearance thanks to aggressive design changes.
"The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé is, quite simply, a beautiful vehicle," opines Phil Horton.
"It’s obvious from the first glance that this new coupé possesses the dynamic styling and elegant design worthy of a new BMW Series," says the BMW Australia MD.
