BMW 5 Series Touring: Australian details

Petrol and diesel versions of new BMW 5 Series wagon confirmed from October

BMW has announced local specifications for its new 5 Series Touring ahead of its October release in Australia.

Based on the latest 5 Series sedan, the large German wagon will be available in turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol and diesel forms, priced from just under $100,000.

Neither the diesel-powered 520d Touring (priced from $99,900 plus on-road costs) nor the petrol 530i Touring (from $115,500) will have any direct rivals, with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate available here only in All-Terrain crossover form and the Audi A6 on offer locally only in RS 6 and Allroad guises.

Both models will bring increased cargo space of 570 litres behind the rear seats – extending to 1700 litres with them folded – as well as semi-autonomous functionality, sixth-generation iDrive infotainment and the choice of Luxury Line and M Sport equipment grades.

The 520d opens the range and delivers 140kW and 400Nm while consuming just 4.9L/100km and being able to hit 100km/h in 7.8 seconds, while the 530i offers 185kW/350Nm, consumes 6.5L/100km and hits 100km/h in a claimed 6.5sec.

New features include an automatic tailgate with hands-free control, separate opening rear windscreen and automatically retracting rear cargo cover.

Other standard equipment unique to the wagon includes roller sunblinds for the rear side windows, Silver Matte roof rails, remote control folding for the 40/20/40-split rear seatbacks and a specialised luggage compartment package comprising two sliding rails and four mounted fastening points.

A total of 13 exterior paint options (two non-metallic, 11 metallic) will be available, plus six interior trim finish options, seven Dakota leather upholstery colours and four Nappa leather options for the 530i when specified in Luxury Line trim.
