BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe 'on the docks'

Longer, sleeker four-door 8 Series variants are just weeks away from customer delivery

Preparations are already under way for the handover of the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe to Aussie buyers.

The slinky new models – aimed right at the heart of the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS – are already "on the docks" in Australia, according to Nick Raman, Product Communications Manager at BMW Australia.

There's no plan for a local media launch; the low-roof sedans will just be shipped out to paying customers. And new six-cylinder/rear-drive variants of the existing (two-door) 8 Series Coupe and Convertible are also shortly to reach buyers.

"There's 840i Gran Coupe, M850 xDrive Gran Coupe – that's the V8 with all-wheel drive – and then there's the 840i Coupe... and 840i Convertible," Raman explained to carsales during the first drive of the M8 Coupe in Portugal this week.

The turbocharged six-cylinder engine under the bonnet of the 840i has been sampled already by carsales at the Gran Coupe's global launch in Portugal (review to be published next week), and runs through an eight-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels. Peak output for the 3.0-litre engine is rated at 250kW and 500Nm for a 0-100km/h time of 5.2 seconds.

The same six-cylinder engine powers the new 840i variants of coupe and convertible for respective 0-100km/h times of 5.0 and 5.3 seconds.

In contrast, the turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 of the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe produces 390kW and 750Nm for a 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds.

The M850i is also fitted with Adaptive M Suspension Professional with Active Roll stabilisation and M Technology Package, in addition to the 840i Gran Coupe's mechanicals.

As standard, the 840i variants (two-door and Gran Coupe) ride on 20-inch alloy wheels with run-flat tyres and feature M Sport Package, Adaptive M Suspension, 374mm M Sport Brakes, M Sport Differential, Integral Active Steering (rear-wheel steering), soft-close doors, BMW Display Key and Driving Assistant Professional.

Added to the standard specification are features such as Parking Assistant Plus, BMW Laserlight, panoramic glass sunroof, Comfort Access system, including powered tailgate, BMW Live Cockpit Professional 12.3-inch instrument cluster, 10.25-inch infotainment display with BMW Operating System 7.0, front-seat ventilation, wireless smartphone charging and an M Leather Steering Wheel.

Other features built into the price include: BMW Gesture Control, a harman/kardon Surround Sound System with 16 speakers BMW Extended Leather ‘Merino’ upholstery, electric roller sunblinds and multifunctional seats for driver and front passenger, including lumbar support,

These features are standard for the M850i Gran Coupe over and above the specification for the 840i variant: BMW ‘CraftedClarity’ Glass Application, BMW Night Vision with Pedestrian Recognition, 395mm M Sport Brakes and Tyre Pressure Indicator.
