BMW has announced pricing and Australian specifications for its new 5 Series Touring wagon.
The new versatile version of the recently launched 5 Series sedan is available in four-cylinder 520d diesel form, or as a 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder 535i, with manufacturer's recommended list prices of $92,800 and $138,900 respectively.
The Touring runs on the same 2968mm wheelbase as the 5 Series sedans, but overall length is stretched from 4899mm to 4907mm. BMW says the luggage capacity ranges from 560 to 1670 litres, with extra load carrying versatility provided by a "unique in class" 40-20-40 split-fold rear seat backrest.
And the tailgate has a separate, hinged window so smaller items can be loaded without the need for it to be fully opened. The 535i version goes one step further than the 520d with a powered tailgate.
The 520d's 2.0-litre diesel engine is familiar in various BMWs and produces a decent 135kW, along with 380Nm of torque beginning at 1750rpm. Average claimed fuel consumption is a thrifty 5.3L/100km and CO2 emissions are commendably low at 139g/km. The zero to 100km/h sprint isn't tardy -- BMW quotes a swift 8.3 seconds.
The powerhouse 535i variant winds out 225kW and 400Nm (from 1200rpm) and reaches 100km/h in 6.1 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is quoted at an impressive 8.5L/100km, with a CO2 figure of 197g/km -- admirable, given its power and performance.
Both versions use BMW's recently introduced eight-speed automatic transmission and are fitted out according to their stature: Standard equipment in both versions includes dual zone climate control, leather trim, power front seats, SatNav, Bluetooth and BMW's iDrive system.
Cruise control (with braking function), head-up display, rear-view camera, parking sensors and BMW's auto-park Parking Assistant are also standard on both models.
The 535i version adds adaptive bi-Xenon headlights, BMW's Comfort Access system and an upgraded 205-Watt, 12-speaker sound system.
In its market segment, the 5 Series wagon is the only German available with a diesel engine. Competitor Mercedes-Benz doesn't offer one in its E-Class Estate, although a four-cylinder diesel is available in the C-Class Estate. Audi Avant wagons include only the high performance petrol RS4 and RS6.
The BMW 5 Series Touring models go on sale in September.
