BMW Concept XM previewed with illuminated grille

BMW M performance division’s first standalone SUV is set for high-tech hybrid powertrain

BMW has announced that it will unveil "an all-new high-powered hybrid-electric concept vehicle" on November 29 that will be called the BMW Concept XM.

Teasing a single image of what looks like a large SUV with an unusual illuminated kidney grille, the BMW XM concept also sports a pair of ultra-slim headlights and two additional roof-mounted LED lamps.

Tipped to be not only the M division's first standalone SUV but BMW's new flagship model, the Concept XM paves the way for a sporty SUV as large as the current BMW X7.

But expect significantly more rakish rear styling that means a third row of seating will be off the cards.

Under the bonnet, expect the big BMW to pack an advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain centred around its current 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8.

Going well beyond the 467kW the BMW M5 CS produces, with added electrification the XM is expected to pump out around 560kW, or even more considering Mercedes-AMG has at its disposal an advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain that churns out 620kW/1400Nm in the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance.

As well as maximising power, the Concept XM will also introduce BMW M's latest chassis technology that is likely to include four-wheel steering, active anti-roll bars, multi-chamber air suspension and next-gen torque vectoring.

All will be needed to offset the Concept XM's excess baggage courtesy of its hybrid system, which could see it tip the scales at around 2700kg.
