Entry into BMW’s SUV portfolio has been sharpened with the confirmation of lower prices for the facelifted BMW X1.
The 2020 BMW X1 is due in Australia in October sporting a new $44,500 entry price – a $1400 saving – for the BMW X1 sDrive 18i.
The more affordable entry point is tempered with a $2000 pricing increase at the top of the four-model range, which does battle with the Audi Q2 and soon the Mercedes-Benz GLA.
The latest BMW X1 builds on the last update released here in January, when two of the four variants received price cuts and extra safety and convenience features included Apple CarPlay, head-up display, Navigation System Plus, an 8.8-inch infotainment screen and an app-style interface controlled via touch, voice or the iDrive rotary dial.
The 2019 BMW X1 is differentiated by a larger kidney grille, LED headlights, tail-lights and fog lights, a new front bumper with bigger air intakes, revised rear bumper, a bigger-bore (90 v 70mm) exhaust outlet (two for four-pot models) and, as part of an optional lighting package, a driver’s side mirror that projects a two-tone ‘X’ image when the car is unlocked.
Anchoring the range, the BMW X1 sDrive 18i ($44,500) is powered by a three-cylinder turbo-petrol that makes 103kW and 220Nm, driving the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic.
The diesel equivalent sDrive 18d starts from $49,900 and gets a 110kW/330Nm four-cylinder turbo engine, also powering the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic.
The respective entry models share 18-inch wheels and an xLine exterior package, Sensatec man-made leather, 8.8-inch centre screen with navigation and an Apple CarPlay subscription. There’s also BMW’s driving assistant package, bringing safety aids including autonomous emergency braking, along with a reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors.
As with the entire X1 range, both entry models miss out on BMW’s latest 7.0 infotainment system, instead preferring the predecessor system.
Next in the line-up is the sDrive20i, priced from $48,500 plus on-road costs. The middling variants scores a more powerful 141kW/280Nm turbo-petrol four driving the front wheels, and in equipment terms adds a 10.25-inch centre touch-screen, head-up display, electric tailgate and ambient interior lighting.
Sitting at the top rung of the line-up is the only all-wheel drive offering, the xDrive25i, priced from $62,900 plus on-road costs. This time, a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four cranks 170kW and 350Nm, sending drive to all four wheels via an eight-speed auto.
The BMW X1 xDrive25i gets the aforementioned equipment, along with leather trim, 19-inch alloy wheels, heated and powered front seats, keyless entry, auto-dimming rear view mirror and side mirrors, dual-zone climate control and M Sport steering.
Joining the range are three new exterior paint colours (Jucaro Beige metallic, BMW Individual Storm Bay metallic and, for M Sport models, Misano Blue metallic) and four new optional wheel designs.
With all that said, the biggest X1 shake-up is likely to come in 2020 with the anticipated arrival of a plug-in hybrid variant.
The all-new BMW X1 xDrive25e plug-in hybrid will be available in Europe from March 2020 and, although BMW Australia has not confirmed local sales, the first plug-in X1 is likely to join the range of BMW PHEV models Down Under at some point.
The plug-in X1 matches a 92kW/220Nm petrol engine powering the front wheels with a 70kW/165Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels and a BMW-developed, fourth-generation 9.7kWh lithium-ion battery in a powertrain that BMW says consumes just 2.0L/100km, emits only 43g/km of CO2 and can travel up to 50km on e-power alone (based on the new WLTP test cycle but translated back into NEDC figures for comparability reasons).
Even before it adds the X1 PHEV in early 2020, BMW says it will offer 12 electrified models including the i3 and i8, the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4, 530e, 740e and the upcoming 330e sedan, X3 xDrive30e and X5 xDrive45e.
