BMW hybrid headlines GreenZone Drive day

The yet-to-be-released BMW 5 Series hybrid car will be a star attraction at Australia's largest public test drive of green vehicles in Queensland this week-end

This weekend Queenslanders will have a chance to test some of the latest electric and hybrid cars, even before the media gets to play with them, at the latest GreenZone Drive event.

Running from Friday August 10 to Monday August 13 the four-day promotion allows interested motorists to drive the latest and greatest 'green' cars on a short, 10 minute test route, including the Honda CR-Z and Toyota Camry hybrid cars and BMW’s ActiveHybrid 5 - which hasn't even been launched in Australia yet.

Electric cars will also be available for test drives, including the Nissan LEAF and another Australian first in the form of the Renault Fluence ZE.

Several low emission diesel and petrol cars from Asian and European manufacturers will also be available, while the only locally made vehicle will be the Toyota Camry Hybrid.

It will be the fourth GreenZone Drive event to take place in Australia since 2010, after one South Australian and two Victorian trials. This is the first time the GreenZone fleet has made its way to Queensland, and will be the largest public test drive of electric vehicles in Australia to date.

The GreenZone drive is organised by state motoring bodies RACQ and RACV, and aims to provide the public with a free taste of low and zero emission passenger cars, according to RACQ’s Sustainable Transport Manager Genevieve Graves.

"The aim is to show drivers considering a new vehicle how easy it would be to switch to a low or zero emission vehicle that suits their lifestyle, while making a contribution to reducing Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions," she said.

"GreenZone Drive is a way to raise awareness among RACQ members and other Queensland motorists of the real-world possibilities that low emission vehicles provide."

Recent sales figures show Queenslanders are increasingly embracing hybrid cars, with a 33.5 per cent increase this year in hybrid car sales in the Sunshine State, compared to the same period last year.

The latest GreenZone Drive takes place at the Royal Pines Resort in Benowa on the Gold Coast. To book a test drive in one (or several) of the GreenZone Drive vehicles, go to GreenZoneDrive.com.au.
