Australia will get its first look at BMW’s i3 electric vehicle, in the role of official pace car for this year’s Medibank Melbourne Marathon.
The i3, which is scheduled to go on sale locally mid-way through 2014, is part of BMW’s new “i” brand and is available in other world markets in either fully-electric and range-extender petrol/electric form.
The car to be used in the Medibank Melbourne Marathon is in Australia for pre-production evaluation and was considered to be ideal for promoting the sustainability focus of both BMW and the organisers of the Melbourne Marathon.
“With its clear sustainability message, BMW considered the Medibank Melbourne Marathon was a good event to get involved in. There is an alignment between events of this type, and BMW philosophies,” said BMW’s general manager of corporate communications, Lenore Fletcher.
“BMW understands there is a level of local interest in electric vehicles, which can be enhanced by participation in events such as this. With the amount of participation and the high public interest in the Medibank Melbourne Marathon, we are very excited about what is going to be a great partnership” she continued.
Greg Hooton, IMG Vice President Events & Federations Asia Pacific, said “The Medibank Melbourne Marathon is dedicated to reducing its ecological affect on the environment. Introducing the BMW i3 as the electric pace car further positions the event as a leader in minimising the impact on the environment.” BMW Australia is still unable to confirm whether the i3 will be available in pure electric, or range extender form (or both) when it is introduced locally next year.
The 2013 Medibank Melbourne Marathon will be held on Sunday October 13 and is expected to attract more than 30,000 competitors tackling the Medibank Marathon (42.195km), the Flight Centre Half Marathon (21.2km), the Coffee Club 10km, the ASICS 5.7km Run or the ASICS 3km Walk.
Last year, the Medibank Melbourne Marathon became Australia’s largest marathon event in history with no less than 6218 finishers.
