BMW M2 CS 2026 Review

BMW M Division hands its smallest offering the CS treatment, but does it stand tall with its brethren?

Even before unlocking the door, sliding into the racing-style bucket seat and gripping the thick-rimmed steering wheel, the BMW M2 CS comes with baggage. The famed letters on its now ducktailed rump place an extraordinary weight of expectation on the most serious 2 Series Coupe’s pumped haunches. And it’s with good reason as the M Division is, for the most part, on a hot streak when it comes to Competition Sport or CS nomenclature. So, it begs the question: does the M2 CS live up to the hype and has BMW created another instant icon?

How much does the BMW M2 CS cost?

Let’s rip the Band-Aid straight off. The 2026 BMW M2 CS is $172,900 – or $44,800 more than the ‘boggo’ donor M2 on which it’s based. That’s more than mere spare change.

Does it feel more like a highly specified M2 than a CS? We’ll get to that soon.

Either way, it takes the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe platform and runs with it to make a more focused performance offering.

If you don’t fancy the CS, BMW still offers the updated M2 for $128,100 in either six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic guises. Or, for the first time, you can now buy an M2 with xDrive, which is all-wheel drive to you and me, for $133,100 (all prices exclude on-road costs).

The 2026 BMW M2 CS also bolsters the CS range Down Under, which includes the M3 Sedan and Touring, as well as the M4 two-door coupe.

At this price point, direct rivals are hard to come by.

However, considering Porsche continues to grapple with the shift to electrification, you can still purchase a 718 Cayman – although only as a base model with a turbo four-cylinder engine. Head to carsales for a used 718 GT4, then...

Another brand backtracking on EVs is Lotus, with the Emira offering up an interesting alternative to the M2 CS. Or, for something left of field, the American Chevrolet Corvette offers V8 muscle, while the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 packs hybrid six-cylinder turbo punch.

BMW’s five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty applies and the M2 CS gains three years of complimentary roadside assistance. Servicing intervals mirror the M2 at 12 months/20,000km, while the first five years/80,000km of upkeep can be prepaid for $3584 which is pretty reasonable for a German scorcher.

What equipment comes with the BMW M2 CS?

The venerable Bavarian marque knows a thing or two about polarising design and the 2026 BMW M2 CS is, well, a conversation starter.

Although, the upcoming Neue Klasse styling seems to be a universal hit, which isn’t something generally said about this second generation (G87) M2. And that is a shame.

When painted with darker hues, the pumped wheelarches and chunky proportions work a treat. The M2 CS builds on that with myriad carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) bits, including the roof, rear diffuser and mirror caps. And of course, the boot lid, which incorporates the ducktail spoiler.

Elsewhere, the front splitter is finished in matte Black and the exclusive M kidney grille has optimised air inlets.

The rolling stock is special, too, with 19/20-inch staggered M light alloy wheels in M Gold Bronze. Distinct CS badging with red outlines also features and there are adaptive LED headlights with selective beam, proximity-based keyless entry and a shark-fin antenna.

Inside, the carbon treatment continues, with the centre console made from the ultra-light material and helping shed 30kg from the coupe’s total kerb weight. Optional with the M2, the CS gains the weight-optimised and powered M Carbon bucket seats with heating as standard. And how’s this: the head restraints are also removeable for the use of helmets and multi-point race harnesses can also be fitted.

Illuminated CS logos can be found on the door cards (and seatbacks), with extra branding throughout the cabin to remind you you’re in something a bit special. There are flashes of crimson around the cabin, an Alcantara-wrapped, flat-bottomed steering wheel with a centre marker for extra motorsport kudos.

Merino leather, Comfort Access, dual-zone climate control and push-button start are also standard, and there are four exterior paint colours to choose from: M Brooklyn Grey metallic, M Portimao Blue metallic, Black Sapphire metallic and BMW Individual Velvet Blue metallic.

How safe is the BMW M2 CS?

Considering the 2026 BMW M2 CS is a bit of a rare breed, it isn’t surprising one hasn’t been made available for crash testing. Like the base car, it doesn’t gain an ANCAP safety rating.

However, the M2 does gain four stars from Euro-NCAP and features six airbags with both ISOFIX points and top-tether anchorages in the back for child seats.

Active safety is comprehensive, with autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control with stop/go function, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, head-up display, parking sensors and a reversing camera.

What technology does the BMW M2 CS feature?

It’s safe to assume that most owners will be taking their 2026 BMW M2 CS to a race track at some point.

When they do, the CS gains some cool tech to help owners see where they can improve lap times with the onboard telemetry. However, it’ll also goad you into having more fun with the M Drift Analyser. This gadget rates your style like a true D1 master, assessing angle and distance to share with friends.

Being the updated G87 vehicle, the CS utilises BMW’s latest ‘Live Cockpit plus’ and dual curved displays. Each measure 14.9 and 12.3 inches – the bigger unit is tasked with housing the infotainment, while the other is for the digital instrument cluster.

260513 bmw m2 cs 29

The former runs Operating System 8.5 and the latter has custom themes to choose from.

Other standard kit is naturally pretty good, improving convenience levels via wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, voice control, native sat-nav, Bluetooth, DAB+ digital radio, USB-C ports and a Harman Kardon premium audio system. Connected services and Over the Air (OTA) updates are also supported.

What powers the BMW M2 CS?

Experiencing the g-forces pressing you back into the bucket seat, it’s hard not to admire the venerable S58 six-cylinder unit powering the 2026 BMW M2 CS.

And the truth is, it didn’t really need any extra power and torque. But that’s exactly what the M Division gave the racecar-derived twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six, with each rising 37kW and 50Nm respectively to amass totals of 390kW at 6250rpm and 650Nm between 2750-5730rpm.

Naturally, the zero to 100km/h time shrinks, with the CS covering the marker in 3.8 seconds. Almost more impressively, it’ll cover 0-200km/h in 11.7sec and accelerate from 80-120km/h in 3.4sec.

Those numbers become even more remarkable considering the M2 CS remains rear-wheel drive with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic from ZF. Some might also lament the lack of a manual transmission, but it isn’t offered due to the torque hike.

Still, the CS is genuinely fast, one that sees it verge on supercar pace in something that’s generally accepted to be a sports coupe. There’s a touch of lag from the twin mono-scroll turbos down low, but it builds to a heady climax… keeping an eye on the head-up display is vital.

From the seat of your pants, it feels like a quicker car than its donor, the vanilla-flavoured BMW M2. And in its raciest setting, the auto ’box can give you a proper shove in the back on full-throttle up shifts.

Gear changes can be done via the steering wheel-mounted paddles or, for something a bit old school, the sequential gate with the actual selector.

260513 bmw m2 cs 31

With so much torque coursing through the 2993cc petrol engine’s mid-range, there are few reasons to leave third gear on most country roads – especially with second gear being quite short. Still, the engine pulls cleanly (and enjoyably) to redline if you choose to extend it.

Acoustically, the boosted inline-six emits an enticing soundtrack through the quad tailpipes with a fruity overrun. Although, for traditional Bimmer fans, it isn’t quite as addictive as something like the E46 M3 CSL’s induction noise.

How fuel efficient is the BMW M2 CS?

If you drive it like it’s built to be driven, you’d be happy to see less than 14.0L/100km out of the 2026 BMW M2 CS.

That’s against the official claim of 10.0L/100km, up 0.3L on the base M2. It retains the same 52-litre tank and, as you’d expect, demands at least 98 RON premium unleaded.

What is the BMW M2 CS like to drive?

Glancing over the changes made to the 2026 BMW M2 CS compared to the M2 might leave you feeling short changed. The power/torque bump and minimal 30kg weight loss aside, mechanical changes are quite minimal.

The CS gains model-specific engine mounts, while the suspension is lowered by 8mm and receives bespoke (higher) spring rates, dampers, camber settings and chassis control systems. However, our test car is also fitted with grippy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres (275/35 R19 front; 285/30 R20 rear) and they make a substantial difference to the dynamics, too.

This is a more competent version of the pernickety F87 first generation M2 Competition that, with a shorter wheelbase, put up more of a fight and required more time to master. And with massaged G82 M4 underpinnings, the M2 CS’s personality has matured.

But it’s not totally devoid of flair.

260513 bmw m2 cs 06

Essentially, the M2’s thresholds have been increased in the transition to CS. And with the supreme purchase and traction afforded by ultra-sticky Cup 2 tyres, the CS’s front axle arrows into corners with verve and rotates sharply with the revised limited-slip differential calibration.

Simply put, it barrels along a twisty road with more focus than ever before.

Unlike the standard M2, the CS’s rear axle isn’t left wanting for grip – especially on dry, smooth tarmac. All-wheel drive certainly isn’t required here. Although, the slackened MDM traction mode is a must, allowing a little more fun without pulling the safety-net rug completely.

You can also tinker with 10-stage (yes, 10) traction control. In fact, there are myriad mode selections for the throttle, gearbox, suspension, steering and even the brakes. Tailoring your own experience takes time to assess what works for you and you can save your preferred setups to the steering-wheel mounted M1 and M2 buttons. Which is a really nice touch.

The well-documented, thick-rimmed steering wheel notwithstanding, the steering is best left in the Comfort setting as Sport adds synthetic heft. Yes, it remains relatively sharp, but the CS’s rack can oddly weight up off centre at times and remains relatively numb.

Even the brake pedal can be adjusted with Comfort and Sport modes. The former is best reserved for cruisy vibes, with the latter useful for a raised tempo. Just be warned, Sport is hyper alert and sensitive to inputs but offers surety when covering ground quickly.

Our test car doesn’t have the $19,000 optional carbon-ceramic discs but is no lesser for it. It decelerates very effectively.

260513 bmw m2 cs 12

With the immense grip of the Cup 2 tyres, some of the squirm under maximum power has been lost, while interaction and feedback when pushing on hasn’t increased. It’s now less about being an animal to tame and more of a tool that requires a racetrack to exploits its limits.

Unless the road is wet…

In those conditions, with the slick Cup 2 tyres, the M2 CS demands your full attention. Everything needs to be softened off, or it becomes too spikey. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres that are also available for the CS would be more appropriate.

What is the BMW M2 CS like inside?

There’s just enough differentiation within the cabin of the 2026 BMW M2 CS to make it look and feel like a special place.

As you walk up to the car, the illuminated M2 CS badging within the seatbacks is cool and, once inside, the updated 2 Series cabin delivers a strong design statement. Yes, ergonomics suffer with a lack of physical buttons for the climate control, but there are useful items dotted around the gear selector – and the traditional iDrive dial.

High-grade materials and solid build quality of the Mexican-made M2 translate with CS touches and red accents hyping up the ambience. It’s those little touches that makes the go-fast BMW 2 Series feel special, no matter the tempo.

There are a few annoyances, though.

260513 bmw m2 cs 19
260513 bmw m2 cs 25

That CFRP centre console might look grouse, but it robs the cabin of concealed storage solutions. That might not matter to you, but the fact there aren’t any cupholders certainly will. And your phone will be slipping and sliding about within the wireless charge pad.

Despite how they appear, the carbon-fibre seats offer far more cushioning for a long journey. They also hold you in tight with heavy bolstering for the twisty bits. They’re more of a pain in the bum to get in and out of than they are to sit in for long journeys.

You can sit low in them, too. This is greatly appreciated for a legs-forward driving position, but the pedals are noticeably off set to the right. Getting in the back requires origami-like movements, with further gymnastics once seated. At a push, it’s the domain of small children.

What is more accommodating is the 390-litre boot, while the 40/20/40-split folding rear pews offer an added pragmatic edge. Although, there’s no spare tyre, just a can of goo to plug up any puncture wounds.

Should I buy a BMW M2 CS?

Unlike so many other models from the Bavarian marque’s historied past that go ‘straight to the pool room’, the 2026 BMW M2 CS isn’t quite an instant classic.

There is no doubt that the ducktailed CS is a special thing in its own way. You also can’t deny its dynamic talents, or that its combined changes add up to a tangible difference behind the wheel.

But the fact it costs $45k more than the accomplished car on which its based is hard to stomach.

Ultimately, the M2 CS is worthy of praise. On the right road and with agreeable conditions, you’d be hard pressed to find a quicker road car with higher limits anywhere near this monetary value. The problem is it tickles the head more than the heart.

The M2 CS is an experience you admire rather than one you fall in love with.
