BMW M3 ute rendered

The internet can’t seem to shake the idea of a commercial-minded BMW M3

The gloriously fast and practical BMW M3 Touring has finally been officially revealed, but the conversation for some has already shifted back to the prospect of an M3 ute, with graphic designer X-Tomi Design posting a fresh render of a tray-back G80 M3 to his Facebook page.

The prospect of a commercial M3 has captured the hearts of BMW and ute fans for decades now. BMW itself built a one-off E30-series pick-up in 1986 and then repeated the exercise in 2011 with an E92, as part of what would have to have been one of the most expensive April Fool’s jokes to date.

Whereas the original two BMW M3 utes – at the least the ones BMW has shown us – were crafted from an M3 Convertible shell, X-Tomi says he whipped up the G80 render using the new M3 Touring wagon as a basis.

Thanks to the magic of modern computing, the rendered design is far more harmonious than its forbears’, which looked like the result of some rushed shopping and sawing – a stylistic rival for the HSV Maloo, the E92 M3 ute was not.

Of course, the flipside of the argument is that the E92 and E30 examples had removable rooves; a targa top for the former and fabric set-up for the latter.

There’s no such novelty with this render, nor would a sunroof be possible for obvious reasons – unless it was a fixed tinted glass panel.

Still, all of the current M3 styling cues are present as you might expect, with nothing being changed in front of the A-pillar – including that controversial nose, which now looks even more domineering thanks to the lack of body panels behind the B-pillars.

Naturally, any BMW M3 ute would be available with the full-fat 375kW/650Nm Competition-spec S58 turbo straight-six, as per the M3 Touring, and while X-Tomi unsurprisingly offers no performance claims, there’s no doubt an M3 ute would be quicker than the wagon (and sedan) on account of its reduced mass.

Despite receiving a positive response so far from the often-brutal world of social media, we can’t see BMW making a functioning prototype any time soon – even as another April Fool’s joke, since it’s been there and done that.
