Which is faster, a high-performance sports car or a light-weight 200kg motorcycle?
If you've got a spare $2800, you can judge for yourself.
By combining both motorcycle and car track work, BMW M and BMW Motorrad have conspired to deliver what they call a world first event.
Usually reserved for motoring journalists and super-rich oligarchs (see our BMW M4 GTS vs BMW S1000 RR test from 2017), Joe Public now has a chance to thrash both car and bike in place with no cops and no speed limits - albeit on consecutive days.
The two-day program will be held at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit in the south east of Australia on December 5 and 6, 2019, that will see up to 48 participants blast around the famous race track in a range of BMW M and M Performance vehicles.
Although BMW Australia is still putting the list of tyre-frying cars (and SUVs) together, it will definitely include a BMW M3 and probably M2, M4 and M5 chariots.
On the motorcycle side there are six steeds to choose from, the BMW S1000 RR topping the list, and is almost guaranteed to lap quicker than any of the cars… depending on the rider skill of course.
Other motorcycle models available for participants to ride include the BMW S1000 XR, S1000 R, R1250 R, R1250 RS, and R1250 GS.
One of the days will be driving cars, followed by bikes on the other track day, priced at $1395 a pop. To complete the double, it will cost $2790.
Anyone can book the track sessions, so participants do not need to own a BMW vehicle to be part of the action.
The BMW M car drive requires a valid unrestricted driver's licence and will include motorkhana exercises then circuit laps and a hot lap at the hands of a pro-driver in a BMW M3.
The motorcycle event requires a provisional licence as a minimum along with protective gear, but BMW will provide gear if requested.
The two-wheeled experience leverages the BMW Motorrad California Superbike School to teach riders to brake later, accelerate earlier and generally improve their lap times. Like the car-based event there are instructors for all skill levels on hand and a stunt rider demo to cap off the day.
