MOTORSPORT: BMW M4 Supercar revealed

How good would this look on the grid at Mount Panorama!

This sexy beast is what a BMW M4 Supercar could look like.

Featured in the current issue of Auto Action magazine, the artist’s impression illustrates a story previewing the 2022 Gen3 technical regulations for Australia’s Supercars championship.

The piece by Mark Fogarty also delves into the rumoured links between the German brand and the Supercars team, Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU).

Team co-owner Ryan Walkinshaw confirms discussions have taken place, but Auto Action reports that WAU is also believed to have had talks with Hyundai and Mazda.

The Auto Action report makes clear that only very preliminary talks have taken place.

The link between WAU and BMW is American Michael Andretti, who is a co-owner of WAU and runs BMW’s Formula E team.

But the main focus of the story is the plan for Gen3, which will supersede the current Gen2 regulations that were an update of the Car of the Future introduced in 2013.

Hybrids will not be part of the initial plan; instead Gen3 will focus on cutting costs while continuing with 5.0-litre V8s and a rear-wheel drive control chassis.

A key focus of the Gen3 working group will be keeping Supercars looking as much like road cars as possible.

That’s become a particular issue in the wake of the Ford Mustang racer introduced this year, which is the first car to not share a single panel with the donor road car.

Following AA’s report linking BMW with Supercars, casales.com.au contacted BMW Australia on the matter. Here’s what spokesman Nick Raman told our reporter Sam Charlwood:

“No, there’s no truth to the reports at all.

“I was interested to read the initial story, it had a lot of detail. But there’s no truth to it at all. It just doesn’t fit in with our plans.

“I think the real opportunity in the future [for BMW] is the M2 CS customer race car that was announced just recently. That is going to be available in the future, and in a few years we’re going to have the future M4 GT3 car as well.

“I think that looking beyond what’s happening right now, there’s a lot of opportunity with customer race cars and new flagship race cars. It’s all looking pretty exciting.”
