Cop this! BMW Australia today announced the 400kW-plus BMW M5 Competition will join the Victoria Police’s expanding Highway Patrol Vehicle (HPV) fleet.
The special-liveried, one-off BMW M5 Competition develops 406kW from its twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 and, with a top speed of 305km/h, is the highest capacity operational police vehicle in Australia (read: it’s fast!).
It’s not the first hi-po model to join the southern state’s pursuit vehicle roster in recent times though. Just this year Victoria Police took delivery of a Tesla Model X and a handful of Volkswagen Passat 206 TSI wagons.
Meantime, the Chrysler 300 SRT does highway patrol duty in NSW, where a Honda Civic Type R is also used for police promotion, and the Kia Stinger GT plies roads in Queensland, WA and the NT.
VicPol’s BMW M5 Competition is fully-equipped for HPV duties and, like all M5 variants, is fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive.
It’s one of an increasing number of BMW vehicles used in police forces across Australia. The turbo-diesel BMW 530d is already in operation in NSW and Victoria.
“Since co-operating in the deployment of BMW 5 Series patrol vehicles in 2018, BMW Group Australia has enjoyed working closely with Victoria Police,” said BMW Group Australia CEO, Vikram Pawah.
“Now with the incredible BMW M5 Competition entering Victoria Police service, the performance level has jumped up the scale. When combined with the safety of the xDrive four-wheel drive system, the M5’s all-round ability aspects makes it a natural fit for dynamic police duties,” he said.
