BMW has released a new special edition version of its i8 supercar.
Called the BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition, the plug-in hybrid special edition unfortunately isn’t the faster, more focused sports car enthusiasts are waiting for.
Instead, the i8 comes with a new paint colour called Protonic Red that’s been specially made for the limited edition.
Look closely and there’s also, what BMW calls, Frozen Grey metallic highlights.
Finally, the i8 supercar comes with large 20-inch alloys wheels that are painted a mixture of grey metallic and an aluminium matt finish.
Inside, there’s red stitching and a new carbon-fibre and ceramic trim.
Under the bonnet, the 170kW 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine that’s assisted by a 96kW electric motor carry over, meaning the 0-100km sprint of 4.4 seconds remains unchanged.
In Europe, deliveries begin in September, although it’s not known how many, if any, of the special edition i8 will head Down Under, nor how much of a premium it will command over the regular car’s $299,000 price tag.
Last year alone, BMW said it sold 5400 i8s, adding credibility to its claim the i8 is the world’s most successful hybrid sports car.
