BMW has previewed an all-new widescreen head-up display (HUD) that will debut in its next-generation 'Neue Klasse' family of cars when they’re launched in 2025.
Revealed at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the high-tech new HUD appears to incorporate the German car-maker’s latest augmented technology and includes all traditional vehicle functions plus music and navigation displays.
It's unclear whether the advanced new HUD stretches the full width of the windscreen, as it does in the BMW iVision Dee concept that was also unwrapped at the CES, or whether it will be supported by a conventional instrument panel and dashboard controls.
However, BMW execs speaking at the show said that they believed huge centre console-based infotainment touch-screens will be discontinued in the future over fears of driver distraction.
“It is more than a vision. We bring this innovation into the ‘Neue Klasse’. As early as 2025 – the year after next – our customers will be able to experience this completely new technology in their vehicles,” said Oliver Zipse at CES 2023.
Set to debut on Neue Klasse vehicles that will arrive from 2025, the radical new infotainment array is only a small hint at a huge armoury of new innovations that will make their debut in next-gen BMWs.
Underpinning the new family of vehicles will be an all-new architecture that will replace the current CLAR platform.
The first of them are expected to be replacements for the 3 Series sedan and X3 mid-size SUV.
As part of the tech advances, future battery-powered BMW EVs will be equipped with up to four electric motors offering up to 1000km of pure-electric range.
