We reported last month that BMW's new Speed Limit Information System (SLIS) is set to arrive in Australia later this year, but perhaps it won't be quite as soon as we thought.
The revolutionary new driver assistance system is capable of reading speed limit signs via a small camera fitted near the rear view mirror and displaying that information to the driver via the car's Head Up Display (HUD) on the windscreen.
The system can detect permanent and variable speed limit signs which are then compared with data saved in the vehicle's satellite navigation system. Should there be a discrepency in the information, the system will default to the road sign.
Even when speed limits are adjusted for short periods of time, such as in school or work zones, the system is able to prioritise the information.
"This technology is a first for the Australian market, and typifies the approach BMW takes in respect to development of cutting-edge technology solutions," said BMW Australia Managing Director, Stavros Yallouridis
"The ultimate driving machine must offer unrivalled performance capabilities, as well as the most advanced safety systems available in the world today."
The new Speed Limit Information System will debut in conjunction with BMW's Navigation System Professional on the BMW 760Li, 750Li and 750i from September production as a standard fitment item.
Customers will also be able to specify the system optionally on the remainder of the 7 Series and entire 5 Series range for $700.
We will begin to see vehicles with SLIS as standard fit in showrooms from early next year.
