BMW teases next-gen 3 Series

BMW vehicle systems validation manager Bernd Jendges explains that hot-idling and hill-climbing tests are on the agenda for that particular excursion, while senior test engineer Oliver Jung says Death Valley is a no-brainer as a test location for cars destined for the US market as they "need to be able to manage these extreme conditions".
Test engineer Mario Masche then explains the process involved in the 'hot-soak' test, whereby the car is left in the sun for an hour-and-a-half with all the windows closed to then see how effectively the air-con cools the cabin afterwards.
What the video doesn't provide is a good look at how the new compact sedan actually looks as the prototype mules are cloaked in a heavy disguise.
However, it's a safe bet the newcomer won't deviate too much from the design language Adrian van Hooydonk has established with the F01 7 Series and F10 5 Series -- mainstream and non-polarising, in other words.
It's believed the F30 3 Series will retain MacPherson struts up front and a multilink set-up at the rear, as per the current E90 model. Nevertheless, the engine line-up will be revamped with the addition of new direct-injection four-cylinder turbo powerplants (in 1.6- and 2.0-litre displacements).
Euro sources suggest the new engines will bring fuel economy gains of 11 to 17 per cent, without factoring in the application of BMW's Efficient Dynamics technology.
That said, range-topping models will retain six-cylinder power, and a twin-turbo version of the six-pot is tipped to power the next-gen M3.
It's reported the new M3's turbo six will be just as potent as the current model's 4.0-litre V8, while bringing significant weight savings and emissions reductions. Also on the menu is an upgraded dual-clutch gearbox.
