BMW teases out X1
X marks the plot for BMW, which is playing a canny game in the lead up to its X1 launchTaking a leaf out of Audi's book, BMW has been pushing ahead with a slew of all-new models over the past 18 months and the trend is set to continue.
Along with the all-new 5 Series Gran Turismo model, the Bavarian car maker is readying the X1, which will slot in underneath the X3 model.
After a preview of the car in concept form at the 2008 Paris Motor Show (see here) and more recently a slew of spy photos (and here), BMW has now released a handful of official teaser photos.
While the new images show the X1 will bear a strong BMW family resemblance, what with the grille, headlights and bonnet clearly displaying Bavarian DNA, it also signals a shift in how automakers are treating new vehicle launches.
In the past these images would have been leaked by Dutch websites or spy photos snapped by ultra-patient American photographers.
As the instantaneity of the Internet changes the way products are launched, car companies are increasingly releasing their own spy photos and 'leaked' teaser shots.
What these teaser photos confirm is that the concept car revealed last year in Paris is very close to the production version.
The final production version is due to be unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt motor show in September, barring any unplanned leaks.
Like bigger siblings the X3 and X5 a range of the petrol and diesel engines will be offered with the X1 when it arrives in Australia early in 2010.
