The BMW EfficientDynamics Project is designed to deliver new petrol/electric drive technology which BMW says will deliver significant benefits across the entire range of BMW vehicles in "the very near future." The first fruits of the BMW Group initiative were debuted in the Concept X3 EfficientDynamics. The rolling laboratory introduces breakthrough fuel injection, transmission and high performance capacitor technologies says BMW.
According to the maker, the technologies incoproated into the X3-ED are invisible to the driver and not only cut emissions and reduce fuel consumption by as much as 20 percent, but, consistent with the marque's core philosophies, enhance driving dynamism and performance.
The Concept X3 EfficientDynamics showcases BMW's new High Precision Injection which is claimed to improve fuel economy on VALVETRONIC engines by up to 10 per cent in the European test cycle and between 5-15 per cent under everyday driving conditions
The X3's inline six is also completely without V-belts. Ancillaries such as the steering servo pump, brake servo and air conditioning compressor are driven by their own electric motors in turn powered by a generator incorporated in the vehicle's Active Transmission. The vehicle also incorporates Brake Energy Regeneration and Automatic engine Start/Stop.
BMW CleanEnergy meantime is a commitment to hydrogen by BMW Group which seeks to "ensure individual mobility in the long term, while at the same time reducing emissions in general and CO2 emissions in particular."
Reinforcing this commitment BMW has confirmed it will release a hydrogen-powerd production car within three years.
