BMW upgrades X5s

Facing stiff competition from its German rivals, BMW has thrown more goodies at its X5 range...

If a month is a long time in politics, imagine how long six years is in the car game... That's how long BMW's X5 SUV has soldiered on for the German brand, along the way sealing its position as Australia's favourite luxury four-wheel drive.

In the face of the success of the new-generation Mercedes M-Class (and the arrival later this year Audi's Q7), and with the all-new X5 unlikely to arrive until 2007, the local BMW operation has therefore revised its X5 offer across the range in an effort to maintain sales.

The latest specification upgrade for six-cylinder 3.0i petrol and 3.0d diesel models comprises standard fitment on an onboard monitor with television, Park Distance Control, CD stacker and Bluetooth phone preparation. Though the equipment would normally add $7470 to the price of a six-cylinder BMW X5, the actual price uplift for new order X5 sixes in $1000.

The petrol-engine 3.0i is therefore now $82,400/$85,000 (man/auto) while its diesel stablemate will set you back $84,200/$86,800 (man/auto).

The equipment upgrade continues on the V8-engined X5 4.4i. Already well equipped, the $111,500 auto-only V8 gets BMW Navigation as well as Bluetooth phone preparation (previously valued at $3400) at no extra cost.

The top of the range X5 4.8is also adds Business Bluetooth preparation, including mobile phone handset, as well as Connected Drive to its exhaustive level of standard equipment. Its price is also unaltered at $156,500.
