BMW wants you to get its drift with 1 M Coupe
Spinning propeller aims to drum up publicity for its new compact road rocket with a pair of audacious drift videosMercedes-Benz may well have a set a world record by drifting its C63 AMG sedan for more than 2km, but now BMW has hit back with some eye-opening drift videos of its own.
The subject of the videos is the new 1 Series M Coupe, which has been touted as the true spiritual successor to the iconic E30 M3 with its compact dimensions and old-school driving characteristics.
No doubt inspired by Ken Block's Gymkhana antics, the first BMW vid features the 1 Series M drifting through a series of virtual walls set up as slalom obstacles on a runway.
However, it's the second video that's the more spectacular of the two as it features the twin-turbo coupe being subjected to some precise drift work on the world's tallest helipad. The helipad is perched atop the U.S. Bank Tower in Los Angeles, which stands a towering 1018 feet tall (that's 310 metres for metrically-inclined types).
The video itself makes for entertaining (albeit brief) viewing, with seemingly not much in the way of margin for error. One website has speculated the footage may have been computer generated, but it looks legit to us…
The $99,900 1 Series M will be by far the cheapest of BMW's M cars when it shortly lands in local showrooms, but don't expect to see these promotional videos aired locally as the advertising watchdogs are likely to clamp down on them for depicting honing.
