BMW has thrown out a challenge to Porsche's Macan with its new X4 model.
The X4, which has been officially launched this week, comes to market with more variants than the Macan, and a similar blend of visual presence, dynamic ability and eco-friendly running.
Built on the X3's architecture, the X4 is being rolled out worldwide in a range of six variants: three petrol and three diesel. The petrol models are the xDrive20i and xDrive28i four-cylinders, and the xDrive35i TwinPower turbo six. Diesel variants are the xDrive20d four-cylinder and the xDrive30d and xDrive35d sixes.
Output ranges from 135kW/270Nm for the xDrive20i up to 230kW/630Nm for the xDrive35d. All engines are Euro 6-compliant and combined-cycle fuel consumption figures run from 5.2L/100km (xDrive20d auto) to 8.3 for the xDrive35i. The ZF eight-speed automatic transmission is the default choice for all variants, other than the xDrive20d, which is also available with a six-speed manual box, although we may not see that in Australia. As the variant names indicate, the X4 drives through a constant four-wheel drive system.
Key highlights of the X4 are its EfficientDynamics and ConnectedDrive features. The former incorporates auto-stop/start function, coasting and brake energy recuperation, all aimed at reducing fuel use and CO2 emissions. ConnectedDrive includes head-up display, High Beam Assistant and Driving Assistant Plus (Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control/Stop&Go function, pedestrian protection, collision warning system).
According to BMW Australia, the X4 will be launched here during the third quarter of this year. Prices are yet to firm up, but the entry-level model will certainly be one or other of the four-cylinder variants in the range – and that's an engine option the Macan doesn't have.
